PA Sea Grant has worked with the The City of Chester since 2009 to help the community become more resilient to flooding and extreme heat hazards. With a population of over 34,000, Chester is the oldest city in Pennsylvania. It is situated on the Delaware River, between Philadelphia and Wilmington, Delaware. Designated as financially distressed in 1995, recent redevelopment has begun to re-energize the waterfront and surrounding communities.
Chester is no stranger to the perils of flooding; the city experienced a catastrophic flood in 1971 that destroyed the Eyre Park community near Chester High School. Future climate is expected to increase storms and extreme weather events like floods and heat waves with the potential to impact everyday life in Chester City.
